The Fools Cup
A Herbal Tea for New Beginnings & Follicular Phase
As an amateur herbalist, I thought a fun challenge to give myself was making an herbal tea recipe inspired by my tarot card of the day. This helps me to practice my herbal blending skills while also deepening my understanding of the card. But it’s not just about symbolism and fun aesthetics. As I move through my menstrual cycle, I’m choosing herbs that support each phase of my body, blending together intuition, plant medicine, and of course, a little magick.
At times I get so caught up in tasks that I don’t allow my body a chance to catch up. I spend so much time caught up in my mind that I forget to come back to my body…
To stop doing and just be
To stop thinking and just feel
This series in an invitation to slow down, to reflect, and to connect the archetypes of the tarot with the rhythms within me. To fully connect my human experience to that of the journey through the tarot. The cards offer guidance, the herbs offer support, and together they create a space for not just learning the story but feeling the full energetic connection.
This morning’s tea was inspired by The Fool.
That bright-eyed wanderer at the very start of his journey through the tarot. In many ways, The Fool’s energy mirrors the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle: a time of renewal, creativity, and expanding possibilities. After menstruation, hormone levels rise, energy returns, and the body readies itself for growth.
The Recipe
I blend similar to the way I bake. A little of this, a dash of that, and always measuring the best ingredients with your heart. I often carry the carefreeness of the Fool around my kitchen with me. Generally, I try to have around 2 teaspoons of herbs for each cup of water. You can mix and match the amounts of herbs depending on what you are wanting to call in to your day. Try to get out of your head and have a little fun. Channel your inner Fool.
Holy Basil (Tulsi) for balance. The Fool reminds me to trust the process. Tulsi offers stress relief and mood support to keep me steady on the journey of today.
Hibiscus for vitality. It calls gratitude and abundance into my life. The bright color adds a vivid display of passion, potential, and the excitement of unlimited possibilities.
Lavender – Softens mental chatter and soothes the nervous system, inviting ease into new beginnings. Lavender aligns with The Fool’s peaceful trust in the unfolding path.
Red Clover – Rich in phytoestrogens, red clover nurtures hormonal balance and supports the rise of estrogen typical of the follicular phase, complementing the body’s natural rhythm of creation and renewal.
Steep for about 10 minutes in very hot/almost boiling water. Be sure it’s covered to keep the good stuff in. Add a little honey for sweetness if you wish.
(Ex: 1/2 tsp Tulsi, 1 tsp Red Clover, 1/4 tsp Lavendar, 1/4 tsp Hibiscus for 1 cup of tea)
Sit back, sip your tea, and dream up your next journey like no one has ever made you feel like a fool.
XOXO,
Maykayla
